How to Increase Mind Power

Staying healthy and fit isn't just about maintaining a normal weight. The mind also needs exercise and proper nutrients. A healthy mind allows you to concentrate, improves memory and provides cognitive processes important for daily functions. Exercising the mind also helps prevent elderly conditions such as Alzheimer's disease or dementia. Improving mind power includes mental exercises, a healthy diet and vitamin supplements.

Step 1

Breathe deeply and sit up straight. Just like any other tissue, the brain needs oxygen. The more blood and oxygen that reach the brain, the more nutrients it receives, improving brain power. Posture and breathing help keep blood and oxygen circulating properly.

Step 2

Practice meditation. It's been shown that meditation improves brain power. Meditation relaxes you, lowers stress and allows you to focus on breathing. The focus and concentration help exercise the brain.

Step 3

Use herbs and natural supplements. Some herbs have been shown to increase neurotransmitters, improve cognitive skills and lower stress. Herbs such as St. John's Wort, vinpocetine and Gingko biloba have been shown to improve brain power.

Step 4

Learn a new language. Take a class or install language learning software. Learning a language slows the aging process in brain cells. The learning process improves brain plasticity, which is important in brain cell development.

Step 5

Practice cognitive gaming. Crossword puzzles and other mind games improve brain power by forcing you to exercise. Playing mind games has been shown to slow the aging process, and it prevents the development of cognitive diseases such as Alzheimer's and age-related dementia.
