Fresh City is a restaurant chain in the New England states that pledges to provide fresh and healthy meals. The restaurant chooses organic or local ingredients when possible and uses only naturally raised meats that contain no antibiotics. Although Fresh City goes out of its way to provide a nutritious dining experience, some options at the restaurant are not as healthy as others. Thankfully, Fresh City has a very flexible menu and allows you to customize your meal to fit your individual nutrition needs.

Stir Fry

Fresh City offers made-to-order stir-fry dishes that include your choice of sauce, rice or noodles, and protein accompaniment. Choose the salmon stir fry to receive 1 g of omega-3 fatty acids, which are important for heart health. Another healthy choice is opting for brown rice over jasmine rice to ensure you are getting all the benefits of whole grains. Whichever stir-fry you choose, you'll receive a generous portion of fresh vegetables, rich in vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. Consider asking for a half portion of sauce, as some of the sauces are high in sodium, ranging from 239 mg in a serving of the peanut sauce to 975 mg in the BBQ sauce.

Burritos

Fresh City's burritos are available wrapped in a tortilla or served in a bowl. Choosing a bowl will cut 310 calories and 52 g carbohydrate from your burrito. You can reduce your fat intake by opting for a burrito without cheese or sour cream. For instance, the Poblano Roasted Vegetable burrito contains 27 g fat in the standard recipe, but you can reduce the fat content to 22 g by ordering it without sour cream and 18 g without cheese.

Salads

Choosing a salad at Fresh City is another great way to increase your vegetable intake. Each salad is available in a bowl or wrapped in a pita. The pita adds 136 calories and 31 g carbohydrate to your salad. You can cut your salad's fat and calorie total by choosing a low-fat dressing or ordering half dressing for your salad. The regular balsamic vinaigrette provides about 280 calories and 30 g fat per 2-oz. serving, while the fat-free vinaigrette has only 32 calories and 0 g fat. You can also cut your total fat and calorie intake by omitting the cheese from your salad.

Sandwiches

Fresh City has many sandwich options on the menu, as well. Some of the sandwich options are high in fat, such as the Cordoba Turkey sandwich, which provides 767 calories and 41 g fat. You can reduce the fat to only 25 g by asking for a half portion of sandwich spread. The All-American Turkey sandwich has 0 g fat, but it does have a large amount of sodium, totaling 1,760 mg. Diets high in sodium may contribute to high blood pressure. All the sandwiches at Fresh City are also available on a low-carb tortilla, which will reduce both the carbs and calories in your sandwich.
