When you replace your golf club grips, you must line them up square with the clubhead. Grip alignment patterns help you place your hands on the club in the proper position. Specialized grips help you correct issues with your grip on the shaft. These grips must align correctly to the clubhead or they lose their ability to help you. Properly aligning a golf club grip requires you to identify where to place them on the shaft.

Step 1

Hold the new grip along the shaft with the butt of the grip next to the butt of the shaft. Mark the line on the shaft for the grip ends with a felt-tip marker.

Step 2

Wrap the shaft in grip tape to prepare the shaft for the grip. The grip tape should cover from your felt-tip marking to the butt of the shaft.

Step 3

Rest the sole of the clubhead on the ground and let the shaft rest in your open palm without gripping the club. Hold the shaft in a straight line away from your body and allow the clubhead to fall in a natural position. If you hold the club in the proper position, it has a balanced feel and will not move on its own. Each clubface will tilt away from the shaft at an angle corresponding to the club's loft.

Step 4

Place an alignment marking directly beneath the grip tape and on top of the shaft. This mark needs to line up with the hosel on the clubhead.

Step 5

Pour grip solvent over the grip tape and into the grip. Hold the shaft with the alignment marking you made facing up. Slide the grip onto the shaft with the grip alignment pattern facing up.

Step 6

Continue to slide the grip onto the shaft until the butt of the grip rests against the butt of the shaft. Line up the grip alignment pattern with the mark you placed on the shaft.

Step 7

Place the club sole on the ground and hold it, letting the shaft rest in your open palm without gripping the club. The grip alignment pattern should line up with the shaft and straight down to the hosel. You have one to two minutes to make any minor adjustments to the grip. Allow the grips to sit overnight.
