Balance and release point are two crucial aspects of a pitcher's success in baseball. The ability to throw consistent strikes is dependent upon these two elements. The towel drill is one exercise that is often used to create and maintain proper balance, timing, mechanics and release point. Perform the towel drill under supervision of your coach or trainer to ensure it is executed properly.
Step 1
Hold a small towel in your pitching hand so it is folded in two with your hand in the middle of the towel. Stand on the pitcher's mound in the set position or wind-up position. Hold the towel between your middle finger and thumb of your pitching hand, leaving roughly 12 inches of towel showing, advises Tom House in his book "The Pitching Edge."
Step 2
Ask a partner to stand about five feet in front of you holding a baseball glove or other small target out away from him at waist level. Modify the distance depending on the height of the pitcher.
Step 3
Begin your windup and attempt to knock the glove off your partner's hand with the towel on the follow-through of your pitch. Perform 15 to 20 repetitions.
