Protein is an essential source of fuel for the body. Relatively small amounts of protein may allow you to feel full for long periods of time, which helps make the process of weight loss easier for people dealing with appetite control. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins as well as enzymes, according to Molecular Expressions online. The human body is able to produce 10 of the 20 amino acids that are necessary for life. The other 10 amino acids need to be obtained from the diet, which can come from foods high in protein. To lose weight on a high-protein diet, you should to be aware of healthy sources of dietary protein. If you eat protein that is high in saturated or trans fats, you will not get optimum results from your high-protein diet plan.

Dairy Products

Low-fat dairy products are healthy protein options, such as low-fat or non-fat plain yogurt. Eggs are also healthy, natural sources of protein. When you consume dairy products, you are also going to benefit from calcium, which supports your bones and teeth. You should limit dairy that is high in sugar as well as fat, such as cow's milk. Healthy alternatives are unsweetened almond milk and soy milk. Cheese is another source of protein, but choose low-fat options such as reduced-fat Swiss, American and havarti.

Lean Meats

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, complete proteins provide all of the essential amino acids. According to the University of Arizona, failure to receive essential dietary amino acids will cause the protein in the body, such as muscle, to break down. This happens because the body breaks down the muscle to obtain the amino acids that it is not receiving. Unfortunately, the body is not able to store amino acids for future use, so you must derive the proper amount of amino acids through your diet every day to maintain health. Meats are complete protein sources, and lean meat is optimal for high-protein diets. Healthy sources of lean meat includes chicken, turkey and ham. All skin should be removed before eating poultry to ensure lower fat counts. There are lean beef selections at grocery stores, but most restaurant hamburger and beef is high in fat.

Seafood

Seafood is another complete protein source. Fish is generally low in fat, and the fat it does contain is healthy fatty acids that are essential for health. Salmon, herring, sardines, tuna and trout are all healthy sources of protein. MayoClinic.com says that diets with focus on high protein consumption recommend seafood.
