In the sport of boxing, the hand is a boxer's greatest weapon. Adequate padding of the hand and wrist support is a crucial factor in the protection of the tendons, ligaments and bones of the hand and wrist. Knowing what factors can make one bag glove better than another can save you from injury.

History

The boxing glove has evolved throughout the ages. In ancient times, boxers were reported to use leather straps wrapped around the hands and wrist that were sometimes adorned or filled with metal referred to as cesti. As boxing gained popularity the violent and bloody matches that had become commonplace sparked public outcry and the need for protection for the boxer and his opponent became more important. Developments in hand and wrist protection have lead to the gloves we know today.

Types

There are two different types of bag glove and both have their own use within the sport of boxing. Used in conjunction with a speed bag, the speed bag glove is the smallest type of boxing glove and features an unattached thumb resembling a mitten. A heavy bag glove can be used with the heavy bag, focus mitts and during drills and sparring. A heavy bag glove features an elongated cuff and an attached thumb.

Sizes

Bag gloves come in a wide range of sizes. Speed bag gloves are available in an 8 oz weight. Heavy bag gloves come in 12,14 and 16 oz weights. The 16 oz size is the most commonly used weight in gyms and boxing classes as they provide the most padding and support.

Fasteners

Speed bag gloves and heavy bag gloves have different types of closures. Speed bag gloves have an elastic band that runs across the wrist of the glove to keep them on the hand during use. Heavy bag gloves feature a strap that goes around the wrist and a hook and loop material that secures the glove.
