Fielding ground balls is a crucial skill for infielders in baseball. Second basemen, shortstops, third basemen and, to a lesser degree, first basemen need to have adequate fielding skills to play their positions well. The ability to cleanly field ground balls and make infield plays helps keep the bases clear and your team in the game. Even if you are a competent infielder, you always can make improvements to your fielding technique.
Step 1
Practice the basics of fielding ground balls regularly to refine your technique and make the process automatic. Bend your knees with a straight back as the ball approaches. Hold your glove near the ground with your throwing hand just above the glove with fingers pointing up. Watch the ball into your glove.
Step 2
Practice different ground ball scenarios to enhance your fielding even more. Practice your backhand by moving to your right with a quick crossover step and watching the ball into your glove. Plant your right foot and make an accurate throw to the base. Move left if you are left-handed.
Step 3
Move to your right with a quick crossover step to catch a ground ball with your forehand. Steady your feet and step toward the base as you throw if you have time. Practice off-balance throws for situations when you do not have time.
Step 4
Transfer the ball from your glove to your throwing hand quickly to speed up the play. Practice reaching into your glove with your throwing hand to retrieve the ball when time permits to avoid bobbling the ball.
Step 5
Practice pivoting your body to throw to second base for a double play from whichever infield position you play. Transfer the ball from glove to hand quickly and make an accurate throw to the shortstop or second baseman.
