Coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10, is a compound manufactured naturally in the energy-producing center of cells called the mitochondria. CoQ10 provides a number of functions for your body, such as boosting the immune system, and also is a beneficial nutrient during pregnancy.
Free Radical Prevention During Pregnancy
Coenzyme Q10 works as an antioxidant, helping to fight off free radicals, unstable substances that form when your body converts food into glucose for energy. A buildup of free radicals over time can contribute to an enhancement in the aging process and lead to the development of numerous health conditions, including heart disease and some forms of cancer. Coenzyme Q10 neutralizes free radicals and can help to prevent their damage. Coenzyme Q10 is important for a healthy pregnancy because free radicals can harm any cell or tissue.
Treating Infertility
According to MayoClinic.com, a few studies have suggested that coenzyme Q10 might be able to improve fertility in men. Coenzyme 10 might be beneficial in helping to treat infertility conditions such as low sperm counts and in enhancing sperm motility. More research is needed to confirm these findings.
Other Benefits
A study conducted by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Catholic University in Rome, Italy, led by a team of researchers found that coenzyme Q10 can be used to help ensure a healthy pregnancy. The study focused on coenzyme Q10 levels in 483 pregnant women and found that those women who have a higher dose of coenzyme Q10 in their diet have a signification difference in contractile activity, having a stronger uterine muscle, especially during the third trimester. Although coenzyme Q10 is produced naturally in the mitochondria, you can eat a variety of dietary sources that will help to boost coenzyme Q10 production. According to the University Maryland Medical Center, good sources of coenzyme Q10 include oily fish like tuna and salmon and organ meats such as liver.
Considerations
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, coenzyme Q10 might interact with blood pressure medications like toprol, vastotec and cardizem; blood thinning medications such as plavix and coumadin; and betoptic, which treats glaucoma. Consult a health care professional if you are taking any of these medications before increasing your intake of coenzyme Q10 during pregnancy.
