Riding a bike can be done in just about any shoe, but specially designed cycling shoes with cleats on their soles allow you to clip into the pedal and engage more muscles as you ride. These shoes offer you a smooth, efficient bike ride in any discipline of cycling.
Indoor Cycling Shoes
Indoor cycling shoes are made with a rigid layer near the balls of your feet to allow maximum power from your legs to reach the pedals. These shoes allow for you to fluidly push down on the pedals on the downstroke and pull up on the pedal on the upstroke. But, unlike shoes for other forms of cycling, the soles of these shoes aren't as stiff, allowing you to walk in most indoor cycling shoes with a fair bit of comfort.
Road Cycling Shoes
Road cycling shoes will generally have a sole made of plastic with cleats in them. They have an adjustable tightening system made to hold your feet securely and comfortably in the shoe. These shoes are not designed for long walking so they don't offer much traction on the sole.
Mountain Bike Shoes
Mountain biking shoes are similar to road bike shoes, but they have a sole designed to accommodate walking. Mountain bike shoes have stiff soles for efficient pedaling, and they have built in grips for good traction while walking on trails. These shoes offer a lacing or Velcro system for an adjustable fit and protection for your foot.
Winter Cycling Shoes
The design of a winter cycling shoe is more like a boot that covers the ankle for warmth as you ride. These shoes are usually made of sheep's wool, Gore-Tex, or fleece for a warm ride while cycling.
