Sodium bicarbonate, or baking soda, is highly alkaline and may be helpful in relieving symptoms of gout. Baking soda helps to adjust your body's pH level, slightly creating an alkaline-forming state that lessens the likelihood of gout attacks. You can prepare sodium bicarbonate in several ways to treat your gout symptoms; however, baking soda can raise blood pressure, so consult your doctor before using it.

How Does Baking Soda Work?

When the body is in a state of acidosis, excess uric acid is produced, which may precipitate into crystals in the small joints and cause gout, according to the book "The Acid Alkaline Balance." This occurs primarily in the feet, and many people discover they have gout when they develop pain in the joint of the big toe. By keeping the body's pH slightly alkaline, the likelihood of this occurring is reduced. An alkaline-forming environment in the urine prevents uric acid crystals from forming and allows waste to be eliminated naturally through urination.

Baking Soda and Water

The most straight forward way to use baking soda is by mixing 1/2 tsp. in 6 to 8 oz. of water and drinking it immediately to relieve gout symptoms, recommends the "The People's Pharmacy Guide to Home and Herbal Remedies." Once in the body, baking soda helps to alter the pH and acts systemically, notes Drugs.com. If you are in the midst of an acute gout attack, you can repeat this drink up to six times daily, or up to a total of 3 tsp. of sodium bicarbonate per day. As your symptoms lessen, lower the amount of baking soda and drink one or two doses daily for maintenance. Check with your doctor for dosing guidelines that are best for your condition, and o not exceed 3 tsp. daily as a maximum dose.

Baking Soda and Lemon Juice

Mixing baking soda and lemon juice creates a drink that has a near-perfect pH of seven, and reduces the risk of raising the blood pressure in those who are sensitive, according to the book "The pH Miracle." However, if you take medication for high blood pressure, you are still advised to speak to your health practitioner or doctor first before using this method of treating gout.

To create the mixture, pour 2 tbsp. lemon juice into a tall glass and add 1/2 tbsp. baking soda to the juice, allow it to foam and fizz until the mixture is completely flat, which may take up to 3 minutes. Add 6 to 8 oz. of water and drink immediately. The mixture should not taste salty or lemony, but rather like flat water. Because this drink has a pH of approximately seven, it will neutralize an acidic pH in the blood stream and in some cases, may bring instant pain relief. You can repeat this mixture throughout the day as needed up to a total of six times or a total of 3 tsp. of baking soda daily. Do not use this mixture for maintenance, only during an acute attack. Check with your health practitioner before using this mixture.

Precautions

Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, can raise your blood pressure, and those who are sensitive should only use it under supervision. If you take medicines for hypertension, always speak to your doctor before using baking soda for any condition. Too much baking soda may interfere with digestion, causing low acidity and leading to acid reflux and related problems. Never exceed a total of 3 tsp. of sodium bicarbonate daily.
