The Nintendo Wii console can be used to improve fitness for millions of people in the United States. Wii fitness programs are designed to be fun, but also rigorous and varied enough to provide a true workout for anyone. Mixing things up with Wii fitness programs can be an effective way of jump-starting any workout regimen.
The Original Wii Fit
The original Wii Fit was released with the first consoles sold as part of a combination console package. This program consisted of games that worked on balance, strength training, aerobic activity and even yoga. The game even allowed users to track their fitness activities outside of the game. Wii Fit games are played with a balance board and Nintendo Wii remote.
Wii Fit Plus
Released in 2010, Wii Fit Plus is an advanced, refined version of the original Wii Fit. As it contains upgraded versions of the same games and then some, the original Wii Fit is obsolete once you have Wii Fit Plus. Nintendo Wii users who already own Wii Fit can upgrade to Wii Fit Plus for a discounted upgrade rate. New Wii Fit users must pay the full price of the game.
Zumba for Wii
Zumba is a brand of fitness that combines salsa, merengue, hip-hop, cumbia, rumba and other dance styles to put a fun, festive twist on traditional exercise videos. Created by the original Zumba founder and other celebrity instructors, Zumba for Wii takes the user through 30 interactive Zumba routines.
Active and Active 2
Active, which has been replaced by Active 2, is another fitness program available for the Wii. It contains over 70 different exercises that can be combined into any number of customized workout programs. Active 2 even contains alternative workouts, like boxing or biking. A built-in personal trainer provides recommendations and feedback about your workouts, as well. While it is not required, the balance board attachment can increase the number of activities you can participate in.
