Itching skin is a common condition that has many causes. Whether you are experiencing discomfort due to the weather, allergies or a skin disease, you may benefit from using herbs to relieve the itching sensation. Generally, these herbs are safe for topical application but you should always check with your physician prior to use.
Chaparral
Chaparall is an anti-inflammatory herb that can help relieve itching from eczema, scabies, dandruff and healing injuries, according to Lesley Tierra in the book "Healing with the Herbs of Life." Due to its antimicrobial properties, it also helps to prevent secondary infection caused by persistent scratching, the author notes. Apply the fresh leaves or the oil can help relieve itching, heal wounds and reduce dry skin associated with dandruff. Tierra suggests mixing chaparral with echinacea or goldenseal to enhance the anti-inflammatory affect.
Chickweed
Chickweed is the most well known herbal remedy for itchy skin and hot skin inflammations caused by various conditions, Julie Bruton-Seal and Matthew Seal in their book "Backyard Medicine." This herb contains steroidal saponins that help to reduce inflammation associated with irritated skin. Herbalists commonly prescribe this plant for those suffering with eczema, allergies and psoriasis. The authors recommend mixing chickweed with vinegar in bathwater for a soothing and itch-relieving remedy.
Neem
Neem is commonly used in India homeopathic medicine to relieve patchy red spots associated with acne and very dry, itchy "winter skin," Earl Mindell says in his book "Earl Mindell's Supplement Bible." It is naturally antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral, which helps to protect itchy skin from infections. The anti-inflammatory action is most likely due to the steroidal compounds present in the herb. Mindell recommends adding neem oil to fragrace-free lotion and applying to affected areas two to three times per day.
