Mastering the elementary moves of skateboarding will allow you to feel comfortable while attempting new tricks. Maintaining control of the skateboard with your feet remains one of the most essential skills. Learning the turning and stopping procedures will allow you to avoid any hazards in the path of the skateboard. Follow a few basic tips to ensure you remain safe throughout the learning process.

Flip Tricks

The flip trick refers to a technique that involves spinning the skateboard in the air. Practice flip tricks on a smooth asphalt road or sidewalk. Be aware of traffic and pedestrians to avoid painful crashes. Professional skateboarder Nick Tucker recommends using your heels or toes to flip the skateboard in the air. When learning the easiest flip tricks, spin the board with your lead foot. Position your lead foot near the middle of the skateboard.

Grinds

Many skaters feel more comfortable with grinds as the board does not have to leave your feet. The grind takes place as you lock the trucks of the skateboard onto a handrail or flat bar. The metal-on-metal contact causes your trucks to emit a loud grinding noise. Keep your knees balanced throughout the grind to avoid sliding out. Perform a quick jump to dismount the obstacle and roll away. When first learning the grinding technique, use both trucks as this offers increased stability.

Slides

The skateboard slide requires advanced balancing skill. Instead of grinding with the metal trucks, use the wooden sections on the bottom of the board. Leaning back during a slide will cause the board to shoot out across the rail or flat bar. According to The Berrics, looking over your shoulder will allow you to remain balanced throughout the slide. Use the middle section on the underside of your skateboard when learning to slide.

Grabs

The grab allows you to keep the board secured to your feet while floating above the skateboard ramp. Using your dominant hand will help you maintain control of the board. Bend your knees to a 45-degree angle to ensure your hand can reach the board. Wrap your fingers around the bottom of the skateboard with your thumb secured over the top. Grabbing between your legs, known as an Indy, remains the easiest of the grabs.
