Having a quality jump shot is an important factor in being an all-around basketball player. Great basketball players make jump shots look almost effortless, but in reality it takes a combination of patience, timing and practice to develop a jump shot you can count on when the game is on the line. Following some basic guidelines will help you become a better jump shooter.

Step 1

Perform lower-body plyometric exercises to help develop leg power. Do squat jumps; jumping up to a bench for repetitions; tuck jumps where you bring your knees to your chest as well as bounding or exaggerated running movements.

Step 2

Practice jumping straight into the air without a ball to simulate a jump shot. Move your hands from your waist to the shooting position as you practice so your timing will be right during a game. Hold your arms above your head at the top of your jump as if holding a basketball. The back of your shooting hand faces you while your other hand is in a palms-up position as if under the basketball.

Step 3

Leave your feet and actually jump when you take your jump shot. Many larger players don't get into the air and it can affect the shot.

Step 4

Bend your knees while holding the ball with both hands at waist level before your shot. Jump straight up into the air and release the ball at the top of your jump. This gives you the best possible arc on the shot and best look at the basket.

Step 5

Hold the elbow of your shooting arm, or the arm that releases the ball, in close to your body and fully extend it when you release. Snap your shooting wrist at the end of your shot and let the basketball roll off your fingertips.

Step 6

Practice your jump shot from different spots on the floor. Learn to use the rim and the backboard for your shots when necessary. Practice with a defender attempting to block your shot to simulate a real-game situation.
