Racquetball provides moderate to intense aerobic exercise that children and families can enjoy. The ball bounces higher in racquetball than in squash, making the game slightly easier for children. Explaining the basic rules of racquetball to children will help them understand the sport better as they learn to play it.
Basic Concept
In racquetball, two players compete in an enclosed court. Players alternate shots, always returning the ball to the front wall. Players win points by hitting shots or serves that the opponent cannot hit back to the front wall before the ball's second bounce. Unlike tennis and squash courts, the racquetball court has no boundary lines. All of the court's surfaces, including the ceiling and all four walls, are in bounds.
Serving
Before a racquetball match, opponents flip a coin to decide who will serve first. The player who wins the coin toss can choose to serve or receive first. The server then stands in the service zone between the short line and the service line. These two lines run parallel to the front wall. The short line runs between the service line and the receiving line. The server can serve the ball underhand or overhand, but the serve must hit the front wall and bounce on the court behind the short line. The receiver must stand behind the receiving line to return the serve. The server has two chances to make a legal serve. If he fails, the other player wins the serve.
Points
After serving and receiving, players continue to alternate shots. One player wins the rally when the other fails to return the ball to the front wall before it bounces twice. If you win a rally on your serve, you earn a point. If you win a rally on your opponent's serve, you win the serve.. Players continue serving until they lose a rally or make two bad serves.
Winning
You must win 15 points to win a game, and you must win two games to win the match. If each player wins one game, the match goes to a third and final game in which one player must win 11 points rather than 15 to win the match. Games must be won by 2 points, so can continue past the 15 or 11 total if need be.
Safety
Racquetball players should wear protective glasses or goggles at all times while in the court. Players also should keep the racket's safety band around their wrist to avoid accidentally throwing it and injuring their opponent.
