Unexpected weight loss may come as a pleasant surprise if you have tried to lose weight in the past. However, losing weight unexpectedly may signify an underlying health condition or medication side effect. Much of the time, unexpected weight loss occurs because of a change in habits or due to stress. However, if you are experiencing unexpected or unintentional weight loss, it is crucial to identify the cause and rule out underlying medical conditions.

Lifestyle Changes

Even if you're not actively trying to lose weight, unexpected weight loss can occur as the result of altering habits. If you have suddenly been busier than normal, you may not have as much time for snacking or may eat smaller meals without realizing it. The additional stress of having a busier schedule may also reduce your appetite and cause you to eat less unintentionally. Take time to reflect on what your schedule and eating habits have been like in the days or weeks before the weight loss to determine if your weight loss occurred because of simple lifestyle changes or a hectic schedule. Keeping a food journal can help you pinpoint dietary causes of your unexpected weight loss.

Stimulant Medications

Certain medications can lead to a decreased appetite, which may cause you to shed pounds unexpectedly. Some psychiatric medications, such as stimulants prescribed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, may cause weight loss. According to Drugs.com, loss of appetite is a common side effect of methylphenidate, a stimulant often prescribed for ADHD. Other stimulants, such as street drugs and diet or energy pills, may cause decreased appetite, leading to weight loss. If you have been prescribed stimulant medications and are experiencing loss of appetite and weight loss as a result, timing your doses to wear off just before meals or taking the medicine after meals may reduce these side effects.

Gastrointestinal Disorders

Certain gastrointestinal disorders may cause unexpected weight loss. According to MayoClinic.com, diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, peptic ulcer disease and celiac disease may cause weight loss due to loss of appetite or malabsorption of nutrients from the foods you eat. Some of these conditions may cause weight loss even if you're consuming as much or more food as you normally do. If you suspect a gastrointestinal disorder may be causing you to lose weight unintentionally, speak to your physician about diagnostic testing, treatment and dietary changes.

Other Medical Conditions

Some serious medical conditions may result in unexpected weight loss. While unexpected weight loss most often occurs because of lifestyle changes or minor gastrointestinal upset, it is important to rule out more serious conditions. Conditions such as cancer, kidney disease and HIV often cause unexplained weight loss. If you have ruled out other causes, such as lifestyle changes or medications, speak with your physician.
