Colic is a condition in infancy characterized by hours of intense crying that is difficult or impossible to soothe. According to AboutKidsHealth, this condition is usually diagnosed by the rule of three; crying for three or more hours per day, for three days a week for at least three straight weeks. Signs of colic usually begin at two to three weeks old and can last up to three to four months before it begins to subside. Herbal tea, such as that made with fennel, may help soothe symptoms of colic. Speak with your baby's pediatrician before giving her fennel tea for colic.

Symptoms

Babies who have colic may appear to be in pain with intense, unstoppable crying. According to AboutKidsHealth, during these episodes of crying, babies may stiffen with stretched legs and arms or draw their arms and legs closely to their bodies. In addition, the stomach may appear to be tight or swollen. These episodes will likely occur at the same time of day.

Fennel

Fennel is a herb that is used medicinally to promote absorption and digestion. Fennel has properties that help to relax spasms in the digestive tract as well as increase digestive enzymes. According to Herbs2000, the carminative action of this herb helps to reduce flatulence and abdominal bloating and swelling. Fennel tea has been a traditional remedy for treating colicky babies for many years.

Uses

Some research suggests that fennel tea may be helpful in reducing symptoms of colic, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Tea made with this herb can be given directly to your baby. To make fennel tea, add 1 tsp. of dried herb to 1 cup of hot water. Allow the tea to stand for up to 20 minutes with the fennel root, cool and strain. The University of Maryland Medical Center suggests giving your baby 1 tsp. of fennel tea before and after each feeding to help get rid of gas and relax your baby's gastrointestinal tract. If you are breastfeeding, you may drink one cup of fennel tea up to six times per day.

Recommendations

If your baby is suffering from colic, certain steps can be taken to help reduce the symptoms. Try gently rubbing your baby's stomach in a circular motion to help him pass gas. Speak with your baby's pediatrician about bottle and nipple recommendations if you bottle feed. In addition, burping your baby more frequently during feeding can reduce the amount of air in his tummy.
