Your immune system is responsible for defending the body against infectious microorganisms. Through immune response, your body attacks harmful elements and invaders to prevent disease, infection and illness. In many cases your immune system keeps the delicate balance of bacterial and fungal flora in check. Other times, you may contract a virus, such as the flu or cold. Although you don't have immunity against everything, eating foods to help build and strengthen your immune response can help safeguard your body from unwanted illness.

Probiotic Yogurt

Probiotics, also referred to as beneficial or "good" bacteria, play a vital role in maintaining the intestinal mucosal barrier, modulate the intestinal immune response and inhibit adhesion of pathogenic microorganism in the intestines, according to Beatrice Hunter in the book "Probiotic Foods for Good Health." Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium present in probiotic yogurt help to quell pro-inflammatory responses due to digestive infections, autoimmune diseases and inflammation. Regularly eating this food can help improve your immune system in relation to digestion.

Seaweed

Seaweed is an exceptionally beneficial food to immunity as it contains an abundance of vital minerals. It is particularly high in calcium, iodine, zinc, potassium, magnesium and selenium, according to Ron Roberts and Judy Summat in the book "Asthma." It is also abundant in vitamin C, the powerful antioxidant required for healing and immune response. Seaweed such as nori, wakame and spirulina help to boost your immune system due to the combination of vitamin C and minerals, specifically calcium.

Eggs

Protein is a vital component of your immune system. A low amount of protein may result in the reduction of immunity cells, an inability to produce antibodies and similar immune response properties, according to Lauren Sompayrac in the book "How the Immune System Works." Eggs are an excellent source of protein with a variety of vitamins and minerals. However, it is important to moderate your consumption of eggs as they are high in cholesterol. Alternating other healthy protein choices like soy, fish and lean meats is appropriate.
