The knee is one of the body's largest joints. The knee is also the most commonly injured body part, especially during exercise. In 2003, nearly 19.4 million Americans paid a visit to a physician's office due to knee problems, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Elliptical gliders are designed to give you a low-impact exercise. In fact, many orthopaedic surgeons recommend elliptical gliders for those with knee problems. However, even a low-impact exercise machine can cause knee injuries if used incorrectly. You should always consult your doctor if you feel you have sustained a knee injury as the result of using an elliptical glider.
Elliptical Gliders
Elliptical gliders are designed to provide an alternative to other forms of exercise machines including treadmills. Elliptical gliders reduce stress on your joints, especially your knees. Elliptical gliders create a circular motion as opposed to the running movement completed on a treadmill. There is no impact of your feet hitting the ground like that of a treadmill. Before using an elliptical machine, familiarize yourself with the machine, the controls and the instructions. Always start out slowly and work your way up to faster movements and resistances. If you do experience pain, discontinue use of the elliptical glider.
Sprains
A knee sprain occurs when the ligaments, the strong tissue bands that connect the bones surrounding your knees, that support your knee are torn or stretched. Sprains are caused by twisting the knee, awkwardly shifting your weight, landing awkwardly after jumping and stopping suddenly. Exercise, sports, and poor balance and coordination can cause knee sprains. Pain, swelling, tenderness and decreased range of motion are the symptoms of a sprained knee. On an elliptical glider, a sprain can occur if you turn your knee incorrectly.
Strains
Strains of the knee occur when the muscles of your knee are stretched beyond their normal range of motion. Strains can cause a muscle to pull or stretch away from the knee bones. Strains can cause pain, swelling, limited range of motion and muscle spasms. On an elliptical glider, a strain can occur if you start out too quickly or overuse the elliptical to the point where your muscles become fatigued.
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is often the result of trauma or injury to the knee. The cartilage -- smooth, connective tissues -- in the kneecap begin to deteriorate. As the cartilage is lost, the bones of the knee begin to rub on each other. The knee joint may become deformed, resulting in pain and difficulty in performing daily activities. Use of an elliptical glider is not a direct cause of osteoarthritis. However, repetitive use of your knee can result in inflammation and irritation in knees that are already affected by osteoarthritis.
