A saliva pH test measures the acidity or alkalinity of your saliva. Although the human body is designed to be alkaline, the Western diet -- which is high in protein, fats and carbohydrates -- promotes an acidic environment. Because most chronic and degenerative diseases are associated with an acidic environment, monitoring your body's pH level may help you notice trends in your diet that can be changed to facilitate a more healthful alkaline environment. The best way to maintain an alkaline balance is to eat vegetables, nuts, whole grains and a moderate amount of fruits.

Step 1

Purchase pH test strips from a local drugstore, health food store or online. Choose strips with a range between 4.5 and 9.0 to ensure that you get an accurate reading.

Step 2

Avoid drinking, eating or brushing your teeth for 2 hours prior to testing your saliva. Food and drink, prescription medications and physical activity influence the pH level of your body. Refrain from exercise until you have taken your pH reading of the day.

Step 3

Swallow one or two times to stimulate saliva in your mouth. Remove a strip pH test paper from the package. Hold one end of the paper between your thumb and index finger. Place a pH strip onto your tongue for one to two seconds.

Step 4

Remove the strip from your mouth, and compare its color to the chart provided with the test strips.

Step 5

Test your saliva a few times each day for several days in a row to assure an accurate reading.

Tips and Warnings

  • If your saliva pH remains between 6.8 and 7.2, it is a sign that your body has a healthy pH balance. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables to maintain an alkaline environment in your body.
  • Although diet is a primary cause of acidosis, many medications can also affect the acid-alkaline balance in your body. Always consult with your doctor before making any changes in your medications.
