Beta-glucan is a polysaccharide, or sugar, that has antioxidant properties enabling it to scavenge free radicals that may negatively impact your health. Beta-glucan is a naturally derived compound found in the walls of yeast cells. It is well known for its role in enhancing immunity, aiding in wound healing and preventing infection. Food sources of beta-glucan include oats, barley and fungi.

Function

According to Dr. Ley, author of "Discover the Beta Glucan Secret," beta-glucan enhances immunity by increasing white blood cells in the blood which defend the body against cancerous cells and infectious diseases of bacterial, viral, fungal or parasitic origins. The compound specifically triggers non-specific immunity, and immediate response to pathogens, increasing the likelihood that your infection will heal successfully.

Effectiveness

A long history of research suggests that beta-glucan is effective in enhancing immunity and preventing infection through the stimulation of macrophages, monocytes, neutrophils and precursor immune cells. Because beta-glucagon has the ability to stimulate a multitude of defense systems, researcher Dr. Wyde, found supplementation of the compound to enable individuals a better chance of overcoming the harmful agent.

Supplementation

Although beta-glucan is found naturally in oats, barley and various mushrooms, it is not in its usable state due to the indigestible cell walls. Supplementation may therefore, prove beneficial. Forms of supplementation include capsules, topical creams, and injections. Because beta-glucan is water-soluble, Dr. Ley reports it is most effective when taken orally. Please refer to your physician for appropriate dosage.

Risk Factors

There are no reports of beta-glucan over-dosage, however pregnant women and nursing mothers should avoid the supplement. In addition, supplementation is not recommended if you are hypersensitive to any constituent of a yest beta-glucan containing product. Beta-1, 3-D glucan has been rated as "Generally Recognized as Safe" by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
