The diet for blood groups is based on the Blood Type Diet developed by Dr. Peter D'Adamo, a naturopathic physician and author. D'Adamo says eating a diet suited to your biological make-up, or blood type, will provide increased energy, better digestive functioning and fewer health complaints. Check with your doctor before starting any new diet.

Protein

Diet for the O and +ve blood type will do well with protein foods that are easily digestible, according to Dr. Michael Lam, a specialist in nutritional and anti-aging medicine. Lean, organic meats offer the best choices, according to D'Adamo. Cold-water fish such as herring, cod and mackerel supply excellent protein sources. Many of these fish contain rich amounts of iodine, a mineral that can help regulate type O's notably unbalanced thyroid function. Fish best avoided include salmon, smoked or pickled fish, caviar, octopus and catfish. Veal, venison, lamb, beef and mutton will provide the most beneficial forms of red meat protein. Avoid pork, goose, and processed meats such as bacon and ham.

Lifestyle Changes

In addition to eating the proper diet for blood type O +ve, D'Adamo recommends living a healthful, well-rounded life. O blood types thrive on consistent, brisk exercise for emotional balance and physical health maintenance more than any other blood type, so consider getting between 30 to 45 minutes of aerobic exercise at least four days to meet recommended guidelines, according to D'Adamo.

Grains

The diet for O +ve types need to limit gluten. Gluten can enhance digestive irregularities in blood type O's, according to D'Adamo. Avoid whole wheat and wheat varieties including sprouted bulgur, bran, duram and white flours plus whole wheat products including pastas, flours, crackers and breads, according to Lam. Also avoid other gluten-containing grains such as graham, oats, corn, farina and seven-grain products. Instead, choose from a variety of gluten-free grains such as quinoa, barley, kamut, millet, rice, spelt and rye.

Information

The +ve subcategory of type O blood signifies the existence of a unique protein. Certain individuals contain a special Rh protein that is signified as either -ve or +ve, according to MedIndia.com. Individuals with blood type O who carry this special protein have a blood type listed as O +ve.

Warning

Some medical authorities question the validity of the blood type diet. According to MayoClinic.com, no medical research or solid scientific evidence exists supporting any claims made within the blood type diet regarding its effectiveness for weight loss purposes.
