Flaxseed has been getting quite a lot of attention in the recent past for its many health benefits and medicinal purposes. You may consume it in a shake or beverage, sprinkled on cereal, mixed into cookie dough, or any other creative way you choose. For best absorption, grind with a coffee grinder or purchase flaxseed already ground.

Heart Health

Flaxseed is rich in omega 3 fatty acids, which are known for their contribution to heart health. Omega 3 fatty acids have been shown to lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, and reverse dangerous conditions such as atherosclerosis and heart disease. If you are using flax for this purpose, be sure to check in with your physician regularly and never replace your medications with food without first discussing it with your doctor.

Anti-Inflammatory

Flaxseeds are known for their ability to reduce inflammation in the body. Inflammation can occur in many of the body's tissue and organ systems, including the skeletal system. The omega 3 fatty acids found in flaxseed may help to reduce joint pain and it is an easy, low risk way to treat your aches and pains.

Regularity

Flaxseed is a good source of soluble and insoluble fiber, which can contribute to intestinal regularity. Soluble fiber soaks up the toxins in your colon and insoluble fiber sweeps the lining and forms bulk that is easy to pass. Consume about 25 grams of fiber from flax or other foods daily for intestinal regularity.

Cancer Prevention

Flax contains antioxidants and lignans that may help prevent cancer. Lignans have been shown to retard tumor growth and stop the spread of malignant cells. Flax is not a miracle cure for cancer, but when consumed as part of a healthy diet, rich in a variety of fresh foods, antioxidants and phytochemicals, it may help neutralize some of the cancer causing free radicals in the body.

Blood Sugar Control

For people with diabetes, controlling blood sugar is priority number one. Regular consumption of flaxseed is associated with greater blood glucose control and fewer incidence of blood sugar peaks and valleys. Consume flaxseed along with a prescribed diet of low glycemic foods and check blood sugar levels throughout the day.
