If you want to become a great basketball player, you need to have top skills. Effort, athleticism and teamwork are all important factors, but you have to be able to dribble with ease, hit open shots and play defense as if your opponent was trying to steal from you. Playing with those skills can help you dominate.

Ball Handling

This is one of the most important drills for any basketball player. While the point guard will be the key ball handler on any team, it's essential for every player to work on their ball handling. The post player who can handle the ball well is more likely to get open shots than the center who struggles with the ball in his hands. To work on your ball handling, start off at the baseline with two basketballs. Dribble the ball in your dominant hand; as soon as you hear that ball hit the ground, dribble the other ball. Walk to mid-court dribbling the balls in this manner. At the half-court line, jog to the far endline. Then turn around and dribble while jogging to mid-court. Then sprint to the endline while dribbling both balls. Take a one-minute break and repeat the set.

Shooting Skills

Go to the baseline on the right side of the basket about 18 feet away. Take five shots from that spot. Move to the extended right free throw line and take five more shots from that spot. Then go to the top of the key, the extended left free throw line and then the left baseline. Do this twice a day and record your performance in a notebook to track it.

Defensive Drills

All players must perform on the defensive end. To improve your defense, perform the 3-on-2 drill with your teammates. In this drill, three offensive players try to score on you and one other teammate. The opposing point guard dribbles past mid-court to start the play. The offensive players must complete a minimum of three passes before taking the shot. On the defensive end, your job is to get a steal, force a turnover, force a missed shot or get a rebound. You should be successful on four out of 10 attempts.

Conditioning Drills

To improve your level of play, you must be in top shape during the season. Do baseline drills every time you come out for practice. Start out at the baseline and sprint to the free throw line and back. Then sprint to mid-court and back, the far free throw line and back and then the far baseline and back. Take a two-minute break and repeat the set.
