Heartburn causes a sour or bitter taste in your throat and a burning sensation in your chest. The symptoms can be painful and even debilitating, and can last for hours. Heartburn, or indigestion, frequently occurs after overeating, bending over or lying down. Almost everyone has occasional episodes, but smoking, obesity and eating certain foods can bring on or worsen symptoms. In many cases, simple lifestyle changes and altering your diet can improve heartburn and even prevent it. Talk to your doctor about dietary changes you can make to improve your heartburn.

Beverages

Although some people can tolerate an occasional glass of wine, alcohol, for the most part, will trigger your heartburn. The same goes for caffeinated beverages such as coffee, hot tea, iced tea, soft drinks, energy drinks and hot chocolate.

Spicy and Fried Foods

Fried and spicy foods can cause heartburn because they stimulate the production of stomach acids. Although grabbing takeout is easy when you're pressed for time, choosing food other than burgers and french fries, spicy Mexican foods and garlicky Asian stir-fry dishes might help you avoid attacks of heartburn.

Acidic Foods

Foods with a high acid content can also bring on heartburn. Tomatoes and tomato-based products, including tomato juice, spaghetti sauce, chili and pizza, are all likely to produce heartburn. Potatoes, cranberries and citrus fruits, such as oranges, grapefruits, lemons and limes, may also cause indigestion.

Dairy Products

Avoid full-fat dairy products, including whole milk and cream, and opt for the low-fat and fat-free choices to lessen the chance of heartburn. Foods that are high in fat tend to increase your episodes of heartburn.

Chocolate

Chocolate is one of the worst offenders in causing heartburn. Unfortunately, if you are a chocolate lover who suffers from heartburn, you should avoid all things chocolate, including cake, ice cream, brownies and candy.
