Hypothyroidism, or a slow thyroid, is a condition in which your thyroid gland does not produce enough of certain hormones. According to MayoClinic.com, if the condition is not treated over time it can lead to obesity, joint pain, infertility and heart disease. The hormones used to treat hypothyroidism can increase your appetite and make you more hungry; therefore, losing weight with this condition can be tricky.

Step 1

Visit your doctor to get your hypothyroidism treated. According to the American Thyroid Association, once thyroid levels are restored to the normal range with the use of hormones, the ability to gain or lose weight is the same as it is with a normal person.

Step 2

Exercise regularly to help fight weight gain and stress. According to Life Mojo, exercising helps to jump-start the metabolism to burn fat and exercise is also one of the best ways to fight stress.

Step 3

Change your eating, drinking and diet habits. According to Life Mojo, eating several small meals throughout the day, increasing fiber intake and drinking green tea can all help your metabolism. In addition, Life Mojo says avoid caffeine, smoking, alcohol and foods that interfere with iodine uptake because they all can effect thyroid function. Foods that interfere with idodine uptake include cabbage, kale, broccoli, kohirabi, mustard, lima beans, linseed, sweet potato, peanuts and soy products.
