People who do yoga report several health benefits, such as greater flexibility and increased energy. Yoga can have several social benefits as well. According to ILoveIndia.com, yoga and social values go hand in hand. Yoga helps you gain spiritual knowledge and understand yourself, which fosters awareness and positive changes in your personality.

Anti-Anxiety

According to Rolf Sovik, doctor of psychology of the Yoga Journal, social anxiety is a problem for many people. Chances are you can think of at least one situation that would make you feel uncomfortable. Although many people treat anxiety with medication and therapy, yoga is an effective way to learn to relax systematically. Yogic breathing or a few simple poses can help a person achieve relaxation when feeling anxious. Sovik says, “The spirit of yoga reinforces the sense of positive regard to work through fear of judgment or rejection.”

Confidence

According to Yoga.org.nz, confidence occurs on a deep level. It's a natural state of mind that is always flowing. In addition, by practicing asanas, you stand straighter. Yoga helps make your back erect and your hamstrings stretched. Because the way you feel and look physically is determined by how you feel mentally, yoga can help improve both areas simultaneously. Sovik says yoga teaches skills that help you regard yourself in an optimistic way.

Stress Relief

According to MedIndia.org, blood pressure, medically termed hypertension, is often caused by excess stress, strain and emotional disturbances. Yoga helps combat stress and gives the mind tranquility. Through asanas, yoga encourages balance in the nervous system, which controls stress. The most effective way to handle stress is to change your attitude toward your problems. This can be achieved through pranayama, or yogic breathing. MedIndia.org says yoga helps combat high blood pressure because the movements are static. This requires less blood and oxygen to assume a position. The muscles are relaxed, which improves circulation. All physical activity makes the heart stronger by making the heart pump blood efficiently.

Poses

MedIndia.com and the Yoga Journal recommend several poses to lower blood pressure and improve concentration, mood swings and overall social skills. They include Camel Pose, Crocodile Pose, Knees Squeeze, Corpse Pose, seated twists and headstands. Breathing exercises also help promote relaxation.
