Metabolism is one part of what helps you gain, lose or maintain your weight. Activity level and how many calories consumed per day are the biggest factors in determining how much a person weighs.

Identification

Your metabolism is defined by your basal metabolic rate, which is an equation using your height, weight and age. Your BMR is how many calories your body needs to survive while at rest.

Features

Once you have determined your BMR, you can factor in your activity level. Your normal activity level will affect how many calories you need and how many you can reduce to lose weight. Your activity level is determined by the Harris Benedict equation.

Function

In order to lose 1 lb. per week, a man or woman would need to have a BMR of 1,842 and be a professional athlete, or have a highly physical job, to be able to consume 3,000 calories per day and still lose weight.
