How to Cure a UTI With Diet

Urinary tract infections are infections of the urinary system, frequently the lower part of the system including the bladder and urethra. Usually caused by the E. coli bacteria, UTIs are more common in women and can be painful and disruptive to daily activities. The Mayo Clinic notes that while UTIs are generally not dangerous, if left untreated they can lead to medical complications, including kidney infection and damage. Antibiotics are often required to treat UTIs, but certain dietary steps may help as well.

Step 1

Consume cranberries, cranberry juice, or cranberry extract tablets. Cranberries seem to protect against UTIs through compounds called tannins, which prevent E. coli bacteria from adhering to the urinary tract, says the University of Maryland Medical Center. Although it's not fully clear how much cranberry is necessary to treat or prevent UTIs, generally at least 1 to 2 cups of juice or 300 to 400 mg of cranberry in tablet form twice a day is recommended.

Step 2

Consume blueberries, lingonberries or their juices. These berries, relatives of the cranberry, also contain tannins and antioxidants that seem to help eliminate UTIs. If you have an acute infection, it may be helpful to increase your intake of these fruits.

Step 3

Take a vitamin C supplement. Although not firmly established as a cure for UTIs, there is some suggestion that extra vitamin C may be beneficial to those vulnerable to this infection.

Step 4

Eat probiotic foods. Probiotics are healthy bacteria that fight illness-causing bacteria. They are found in fermented foods such as yogurt, buttermilk, sour cream, kefir and miso. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, probiotics may protect the urinary tract from infection. If you have UTI symptoms, increase your intake of these foods for optimal benefit.

Step 5

Avoid irritant foods and drinks, including coffee, alcohol, soda, chocolate, dairy products and artificial sweeteners. These substances can increase your risk of developing a UTI or worsening UTI symptoms.

Step 6

Drink plenty of water. Water will help flush bacteria out of your body through your urine. During a UTI, increase your consumption of water immediately to help your body rid itself of the harmful microorganisms causing your infection.
