Restless legs syndrome, or RLS, is characterized by an uncontrollable urge to move your legs in order to relieve tingling sensations. Symptoms typically occur while you rest, or right before you fall asleep. According to Babycenter, RLS can peak when you're seven to eight months pregnant. Although there is no single known cause of RLS, adjusting your diet may reduce symptoms.

Iron

Iron deficiency may contribute to RLS. Include sources of iron in your diet, such as beef, pork, chicken, turkey, broccoli, kale, collards, lima beans, green beans and whole wheat products. You can also find iron in bread, cereal or pasta enriched with iron. If you feel that you aren't getting enough iron in your diet, talk to your doctor about an iron supplement.

Folate

A deficiency in folate, or folic acid, may also contribute to RLS. Try to increase your intake of folate, which is found in fortified cereal, eggs, beans, sunflower seeds, asparagus, leafy green vegetables, oranges, strawberries and melons. You can also talk to your doctor about a supplement, and many prenatal vitamins contain folate.

Caffeine

Avoid caffeine in your diet if you experience RLS. According to Babycenter, even a small amount of caffeine can worsen RLS symptoms. Try to eliminate coffee, soft drinks, chocolate and tea from your diet.

Considerations

In addition to getting adequate nutrition, you can also help reduce RLS symptoms by stretching and massaging your legs. You can try a warm bath and relaxation techniques. HelpGuide.org says sticking to a regular sleep schedule may also help. Fatigue can worsen symptoms.

Recommendations

Supplements for iron and folate should be taken only under your doctor's supervision, because too much of these minerals can be toxic during pregnancy. If adjusting your diet doesn't improve symptoms of RLS, talk to your doctor about other suggestions.
