Each gym expects its members to adhere to rules and regulations regarding cleanliness, safety and membership requirements. A staff member from the front office or customer relations department can usually provide you with all the information you need to help you follow the rules at your gym. Working out at a gym gives you access to a variety of exercise equipment and fitness classes as well as provides some individuals with the motivation needed to maintain a regular fitness schedule.
Level of Membership
Your level of membership at the gym often regulates which amenities you can and cannot use. A basic gym membership generally includes use of the fitness machines and most exercise classes. Your gym may feature additional facilities and classes requiring you to pay an extra fee to use them such as a swimming pool, racquetball courts and reformer Pilates classes.
Attire
Rules and regulations about what you can and cannot wear to the gym at the Centenary College Fitness Center may apply to your gym membership. This gym requires a shirt to cover your upper body, shorts or pants and athletic shoes. It prohibits members from wearing jeans, jean shorts and garments with zippers or rivets, as well as open-toed and open backed shoes, boots or sandals.
Identification Cards
Gyms, like the Health Fitness Center at Moraine Valley Community College, commonly require you to bring and present an identification card each time you workout. Although some gyms have more lenient regulations, MVCC prohibits a member of the gym from working out without his identification card and charges a $5 fee to replace a lost card. Finish your workout and pick up your identification card at the front desk so you have it for next time.
Commitment
Many gyms feature a free trial membership of varying durations to help you decide if their gym fits your needs. Each gym sets its own policy regarding the minimum amount of days you are required to pay for in order to become a member. It's common for the membership fee to decrease as you increase the time of you membership contract. For example, the fee at Bally Total Fitness clubs decreases incrementally the more months you pay for up-front.
Gym Etiquette
Each gym sets its own rules and regulations regarding etiquette. The Emerson College Fitness Center asks all its members to return gym equipment, such as weights and resistance bands, to their proper locations and wipe down all the surfaces you come into contact with, like the pads on an exercise machine. Members are encouraged to share fitness equipment between sets allowing another member to workout while you rest. Using equipment improperly is prohibited at ECFC and members without the knowledge to use the equipment must seek a staff member for instruction before use.
