Learning to ride a skateboard takes patience and plenty of practice. Skateboarding requires balance, making it a learned sport instead of something that comes naturally. Find a smooth and flat paved area to practice your balance and technique. Practice every day until you are comfortable on the board and able to move quickly. You can add tricks and jumps once you have control and balance on the skateboard.
Step 1
Put on a helmet, elbow pads, knee pads and wrist guard to protect yourself when you fall.
Step 2
Position your feet on top of the skateboard in a comfortable position so you are able to balance. The regular stance is the right foot at the back end of the board and the left foot in the center.
Step 3
Practice balancing on the skateboard without moving. Lift the rear foot off the board and balance on one foot.
Step 4
Propel the skateboard forward by pushing on the ground with your rear foot. Hover the rear foot near the ground so you can quickly push off when needed. Practice balancing on the skateboard while moving slowly.
Step 5
Turn the skateboard by leaning and shifting your weight in the direction you want the board to turn. Turn the skateboard quickly by putting weight on the rear of the skateboard and moving the front of the skateboard by pushing it in the desired direction with your front foot.
Step 6
Stop the skateboard by dragging your rear foot along the ground as a footbrake. As your comfort level increases, lean towards the back of the skateboard to tip the tail onto the ground as a break.
