When you have reached the point where you are accomplished enough in boxing that you get an opportunity to box for a title or a championship, you have a high level of talent and ability. However, so does your opponent. If you are going to have a chance to win your title fight, you must prepare with discipline, effort and key boxing drills.
Conditioning Work
Boxers must get into top shape when they are fighting for a title. At the professional level, you will be in the ring for 10 or 12 rounds. This can be exhaustive under any circumstances, and it is especially difficult when you are absorbing a lot of punches. As a result, you have to do roadwork as a baseline for your training. That usually means running 3 to 5 miles, three or four times per week in the morning before a boxing match. Do this to start your training day before getting into the gym to work on your boxing skills and your strength work.
Speed Bag
The speed bag is an essential tool for fighters at all levels. The speed bag helps a fighter work on timing, quickness, hand-eye coordination and speed. Use your left jab to hit the speed bag. The left jab may be the most important punch in boxing because it sets up every other punch in the sport. Use your left jab to set up the right cross, the left hook and the right hook. Use the 1-2-3 method when hitting the speed bag. This means you hit the bag once, let the bag hit the back supporting rim, the front rim and then the back rim again before hitting it a second time.
Heavy Bag Training
A boxer getting ready for a title fight uses the heavy bag to build punching power and functional football strength. Boxers know that they cannot just use their arms and shoulders to throw power punches. Those punches start in the legs, travel through the torso and are finished with the shoulders, arms and fists. Hit the heavy bag for three minutes at a time to work on your power punching and functional strength within the ring.
Sparring
Sparring is the most important aspect of training, especially when you are getting ready for a championship title fight. You have to get in the ring with a fighter who has a high level of talent and experience. You need to have confidence in the ring and you can't have it if you don't get in the ring to show that you are ready to fight. You and your opponent will wear protective head gear to prevent serious injury. However, you must spar in the days and weeks leading to your bout to be at your best when the title is on the line.
