When you don't have time to exercise before a big event or lose weight before your high school reunion, you may worry about the state of your shape and how you look to others. Luckily, the way you dress, stand and accessorize can have a bearing on how slim you look. Without the time to properly lose weight, you can create the appearance of a slimmer physique with some clever fashion tricks that take you from short and stumpy to long and lean.

Step 1

Visit a tailor to ensure that your pants fit perfectly. When you purchase jeans or pants, fit the widest part of your body and have the rest of the pants tailored in to fit you properly. Then, ensure that your jeans are long enough to wear with a pair of heels. Wearing dark pants over your heels can give the appearance of longer, slimmer legs without much effort.

Step 2

Layer cardigans over your regular shirts and blouses, suggests "Good Housekeeping" magazine. This can help camouflage any belly lumps and bumps that you may be self conscious of. Look for a flowing draped cardigan to hide problem areas and create a longer, leaner line along your torso. Or, wear a cardigan over your shirt and then use a skinny belt to define your waist to look thinner and more shapely overall.

Step 3

Wear neutral dark colors that absorb light. While black is the old standard to look slimmer, dark blue, brown and olive green can give the same effect, notes "USA Today." Wearing colors together such as cerulean and navy blue, can help create a longer line, since the eye isn't interrupted by sudden changes in color. The result is a taller, slimmer look.

Step 4

Pile on long accessories that accentuate the length of your body. For instance, a choker necklace makes your neck look thick and disproportionate to your body, while long chains can make your neck look longer and leaner. Try long scarves worn over your clothes to give the appearances of a longer, slimmer body. Wearing long earrings with a draped scarf and a trench coat is an easy formula to appear slimmer instantly.

Step 5

Stand up straighter. Poor posture has the power to make you look short and slumped when you can look tall and slim, according to the book, "Does This Make Me Look Fat?" Stand up, pull your shoulders back, expand your chest and square your hips and you'll thinner within the course of 10 seconds. Maintain that good posture throughout the day and make it a habit.
