The sport of volleyball requires a rectangular, symmetrical court divided in half by a net. Volleyball courts used in official competitions must meet certain standards set by the International Federation of Volleyball. USA Volleyball, the governing body for the sport in this country, follows all FIVB rules regarding court size except where specifically noted.

Court Area

The standard volleyball court measures 59 feet long and 29 feet, 6 inches wide, according to FIVB and USAV rules. The net divides the court into two equal halves. An attack line runs parallel to the net and 9 feet, 10 inches from the net on each side of the court. The attack line separates the front zone from the back zone. The attack line itself belongs to the front zone.

Free Zone

The volleyball court must have a free zone surrounding the court's boundaries. The free zone must measure at least 9 feet, 10 inches on all sides, according to FIVB rules. USAV rules only require the free zone to measure at least 6 feet, 6¾ inches on all sides. For FIVB World Competitions, the free zone must measure 16 feet, 4/10 inches on the sidelines and 26 feet, 3/10 inches on the end lines.

Height

The volleyball court must have free playing space above the court that measures at least 23 feet high, according to FIVB rules. For FIVB World Competitions, the free playing space above the court must measure 41 feet high.

Net

The volleyball net measures 7 feet, 11 5/8 inches for men's competitions and 7 feet, 4 1/8 inches for women's competition, according to USAV and FIVB rules. Antennae on either side of the net mark the boundaries of the crossing space over the net. Each antenna extends 32 inches above the top of the net.
