Maintaining a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals is important for a healthy body. Asthma is a chronic condition in which the inner walls of your airways swell and become sore. They may readily react to allergens and irritants and become more narrow. Therefore, less air is able to get into your lungs and you may have difficulty breathing. Other symptoms include coughing, wheezing, and constriction of the chest. Specific vitamins and minerals may help to treat or relieve your asthma symptoms.

Vitamin B-5

Pantothenic acid, also called vitamin B-5, may be helpful in treating allergies and asthma, according to MedlinePlus. This vitamin can be obtained in a supplement form. It can also be obtained in dietary sources including meat, eggs, milk, legumes, grains, and vegetables.

Magnesium

Magnesium is an important mineral that may help control your asthma symptoms. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, UMMC, low magnesium levels in your body may raise your risk for and trigger asthma symptoms. The UMMC does state, however, that there is no evidence that supplementing with magnesium can control your asthma symptoms. Consuming an adequate amount of magnesium may be helpful. In addition to supplement form, magnesium can be found in foods such as whole grains, legumes, green leafy vegetables, tofu, almonds, cashews, bananas, and baked potatoes.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C may play a role in asthma treatment. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, research has indicated that low levels of vitamin C can raise your risk for asthma, while other research suggests that vitamin C may help treat the symptoms of asthma that has been induced by exercise. Including vitamin C in your diet may be helpful. Good food sources include oranges, strawberries, melons, grapefruits, broccoli, and spinach.
