A correctly adjusted front derailleur gear cable on a multi-speed bicycle allows you to shift quickly and smoothly from the lowest gear on the front chain ring to the largest and back again. Actuating an improperly adjusted gear cable can force the derailleur beyond its limit, causing the chain to rub against the derailleur or even pushing the chain off the chain ring completely. Proper adjustment of the front gear cable requires that the low and high gear limits of the derailleur be adjusted first. Once you complete these settings, you can then adjust the front gear cable.
Step 1
Shift the rear derailleur to the smallest sprocket. Shift the front derailleur to the largest gear on the chain ring.
Step 2
Adjust the high gear limit screw. Set the high gear limit using the Phillips screwdriver to the point where the derailleur cage prevents the chain from falling off the largest gear on the chain ring.
Step 3
Shift the rear derailleur to the largest sprocket. Shift the front derailleur to the smallest gear on the chain ring.
Step 4
Adjust the low gear limit screw on top of the front derailleur using the Phillips head screwdriver. Set the low gear limit to the point where the derailleur cage prevents the chain from falling off the smallest gear on the chain ring.
Step 5
Shift the gear shifter for the front derailleur to the lowest gear. Loosen the gear-cable clamp bolt on the front derailleur using an Allen wrench. Pull the gear cable tight to remove slack from the cable. Tighten the cable clamp bolt.
Step 6
Trim off any excess length to the front gear cable with the wire cutters. Place a cable end on the tip of the cut cable and crimp it in place with the wire cutters.
