Switch refers to a riding stance in skateboarding. In the regular stance, skaters ride with their dominant foot at the back of the board. This offers increased balance and allows you to comfortably push the skateboard forward. Position your dominant foot at the front of the skateboard to ride in the switch stance. Riding switch remains challenging as you must relearn even the simplest maneuvers.

Slowing Down

A common stopping method in skateboarding involves dragging your dominant foot across the pavement. This simple technique allows you to slow the momentum of your skateboard while maintaining a balanced riding stance. When riding switch, remove your nondominant foot from the back of the skateboard and place it on the pavement. Lean forward while applying downward pressure until your skateboard comes to a complete stop. For a more advanced switch stance technique, slide your wheels across the pavement to slow your speed.

Pushing Switch

Pushing in the switch stance may feel awkward during your first attempt. While you may feel tempted to push with your dominant foot, this will decrease the balance of your riding stance. Lower your nondominant foot off the back of the skateboard and onto the ground. Lean forward while pushing off the pavement with the sole of your shoe. Place your foot back on the top of the skateboard once you reach an adequate speed. For increased stability, spread your feet to compensate for the width of your shoulders.

Switch Ollie

The switch Ollie enables you to catch air over obstacles in the riding path. When riding in the regular stance, the Ollie involves pushing down on the tail of the skateboard with your dominant foot. The switch Ollie requires a significant amount of practice as you must utilize your nondominant foot. Transworld Skateboarding recommends positioning your dominant foot toward the middle of the skateboard. Align your nondominant foot on the tail of the skateboard with your heel hanging off.

Switch Kickflip

After mastering the switch Ollie, move on to a more challenging maneuver. The switch kickflip involves spinning the skateboard above the ground. The Berrics recommends positioning your dominant foot toward the middle of the skateboard with your toes pointed forward. As you jump into the air, flick the toes of your dominant foot against the edge of the skateboard. Raise your feet to allow the board to flip beneath you. Lower your feet onto the top of the skateboard as it completes the switch kickflip.
