How to Replace the Rear Tire on a Huffy Savannah Touring Bike

Huffy produces several lines of bicycle, each geared to meet specific needs. The Savannah line consists of touring bicycles designed to provide a comfortable ride on long excursions. Features include a front suspension fork, a suspension seat post, 18-speed Shimano Revo twist shifters, a rear rack and a padded saddle. Occasionally, the rear tire on your Huffy Savannah bicycle may suffer a tear or puncture. To install a replacement, you must first remove the wheel from the frame.

Step 1

Shift the bicycle's chain to the outermost gear on the derailleur and the innermost front chain ring. Place the bicycle on the side opposite the derailleur and remove the nut securing the rear axle in place.

Step 2

Slide the rear wheel out of the bicycle's frame and disconnect the chain from the derailleur. Remove the rear wheel from the frame completely. Inspect the interior of the wheel and locate the tire valve. Remove the cap from the end of the valve and deflate the tire.

Step 3

Push one edge of the tire inward to break the bead on one side of the tire. Insert the end of a tire lever between the edge of the tire and the rim. Slide the end of the lever clockwise until the tire disengages from the rim.

Step 4

Pull the tube free of the interior of the tire. Inflate the tube and inspect it for tears or punctures. Deflate the tube, then replace it or apply a patch, if necessary. Remove the tire from the rim completely.

Step 5

Use a bicycle pump to partially inflate the tube. Insert the tube into the interior of the replacement tire. Insert the tube's valve into the hole on the wheel rim. Work the tire onto the rim. Confirm that the tube is completely within the interior of the tire. Inflate the tube completely.

Step 6

Fit the rear wheel into the bicycle's frame and pull the chain onto the derailleur. Use the previously removed nut to secure the axle into place. Return the bicycle to an upright position. Confirm that you have properly installed the chain before riding the bicycle.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you have difficulty getting the tire off of the rim, use multiple tire levers; insert one lever at a time and clip the lower end to a wheel spoke before proceeding to the next. When inflating the tube, follow the recommended air pressure guidelines printed on the side of the tire.
  • Tube patching kits are designed for treating small punctures; if you discover a large hole or tear, discard the tube and install a replacement.
