Cellulite on the stomach isn't a serious medical condition, but you can get it treated if it bothers you. Cellulite looks like dimpled or bumpy skin. It is common in the lower abdomen. Cellulite is caused by cords that connect your skin to the muscle underneath. When fat cells push up on skin while these cords are pulling down, a dimpled appearance results.
Step 1
Avoid cellulite treatments such as massages and creams, which are unlikely to show results.
Step 2
Lose weight. If you lose fat all over, you will lose fat from your stomach. Calculate how many calories you're typically consuming, then reduce that number. Eat more low-calorie foods, such as fruits and vegetables. Limit intake of convenience foods such as packaged snacks and fast foods. Increase your cardio activity to burn additional calories.
Step 3
Strengthen your abs to improve the appearance of dimpled skin. "Fitness"magazine recommends the Abdominal Hold. Sit straight on a sturdy seat and rest your hands on the edge with your fingers pointing toward your knees. Firm your abs and bring your toes 2 to 4 inches off the floor. Lift your butt off the chair. Keep this position for as long as you can, or around 5 to 10 seconds. Lower yourself down and repeat for about 1 minute.
Step 4
Ask your doctor about lasers and radiofrequency systems if you still have cellulite after weight loss. This may be the most promising cellulite treatment, according to the Mayo Clinic.com. One system combines negative tissue massage, radiofrequency and infrared light to remove cellulite. The other method uses combined tissue massage with diode laser energy. You will notice improvement after several twice-weekly sessions.
Tips and Warnings
- Avoid liposuction. Liposuction will not remove cellulite, and it could even make cellulite look worse. Liposuction involves the insertion of a narrow tube under your skin that suctions out fat cells.
