High blood pressure, or hypertension, is called "the silent killer" because it is so often undetected yet can lead to dangerous medical conditions such as heart disease and stroke. High blood pressure often develops gradually over many years, frequently with no identifiable cause. However, lifestyle changes can help decrease blood pressure, most notably a heart-healthy diet, exercise, proper weight control and tobacco avoidance. Beyond these, certain natural remedies seem to improve hypertension, including garlic.
Step 1
Use garlic to flavor homemade soups, stews, chili and stir fries. Since garlic is a natural, commonly-used food, it is considered safe for most people even in large doses, according to the New York University Langone Medical Center. As a recipe ingredient, garlic provides a zippy, spicy flavor along with its blood pressure-lowering health benefits, so use it liberally in your recipes.
Step 2
Crush garlic over roasting meat, vegetables and potatoes. Garlic takes on a milder, sweet-tinged flavor when roasted, and brings out the flavors of other foods. Simply brush or toss foods to be roasted with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper and other spices if desired, and top with crushed or minced garlic. Roast at high heat until meat or veggies are nicely browned, tender and fragrant.
Step 3
Take a garlic supplement to lower your blood pressure if you dislike the taste or odor of fresh garlic. Garlic tablets and capsules are available at health food and nutrition stores, and may be helpful for treating hypertension. However, check with your physician before you begin taking garlic tablets or capsules, as they may cause adverse effects for some people.
