Bicycle grips help you maintain a firm and stable hold on your bike's handlebars to make controlling your bike easier and more comfortable. Eventually, however, your bike grips will need replacing due to wear from normal use. The grips may also become damaged from a fall or you may simply want to use a different grip design. For whatever reason, removing the grips from your handlebars is a simple task that takes just common household items and a few minutes to complete.

Step 1

Loosen the clamp bolts on the brake levers on the handlebars using the Allen wrench. Move the brake levers toward the steering stem in the center of the handlebars.

Step 2

Insert the tip of the small flathead screwdriver between the handlebar and one of the bike grips. Lever the grip up off the handlebar, slightly. Spray some household lubricant down into the space between the bike grip and the handlebar. Repeat this step with the other grip.

Step 3

Wait one to two minutes for the household lubricant to work its way down into the grips. Turn the grips several times to release them from the handlebars. If a grip does not release, spray more household lubricant between the grip and the handlebars.

Step 4

Pull each bike grip toward the end of the handlebars, twisting back and forth to help the grip come free. Wipe the handlebars thoroughly with alcohol and a clean towel to remove any remaining residue. Your handlebars are now ready for you to install your new grips.

Tips and Warnings

  • Bicycle Tutor recommends spraying hair spray into each new grip just before installation to lubricate the grip, making it easier to slide onto the handlebar completely. The hairspray will then set in a matter of minutes to bond the grip to the handlebar.

Things You'll Need

  • Allen wrench set
  • Small flathead screwdriver
