Going for a swim can be an entertaining way to beat the heat and get exercise. Whether you're splashing around with a friend or setting up a pool party for your child, devising some diving and swimming games can add some spice to the time you spend in the water.

Colors

One person is selected to be "It," and she gets out of the pool and faces away from the water. The rest of the people playing the game stay at the end of the pool nearest to "It" and they each mentally select a color. "It"asks all players if they have their colors and, when everyone is ready, she begins calling out random colors. When "It" calls a color that a player chose, that player must swim as quietly as possible to the other end of the pool so that "It" doesn't hear him. If "It" hears him moving, she can turn around, jump in the pool and attempt to tag him before he reaches the other side. He becomes "It" if he is caught. Diversify the game by coming up with other categories, including types of cars and types of flowers, recommends FunandGames.com.

Rubber Duck Race

Prepare for a rubber duck race by supplying each player with a rubber duck or an empty plastic water bottle that is decorated like a duck. Each contestant must use only her nose to nudge her respective duck from one end of the pool to the other end of the pool. As soon as a person's duck reaches the end, that player wins. Make the race more structured by obligating all players use the same type of swimming, such as the breaststroke or the more complicated butterfly stroke. Another similar race could involve all players riding pool noodles across the pool.

Scavenger Hunt Race

A scavenger hunt race can be a diving game for players with a variety of swimming skills. The race requires at least two players but can be played with numerous extras. Separate players into two teams and toss multiple "treasures," such as pennies, pool rings and floating toys into the pool. Each team will take a turn diving in and collecting treasures, both sunken and floating. The team who collects the "treasures" the fastest wins. For smaller gatherings you may play the game by tossing in the treasures and then allowing both teams to dive in simultaneously to see which team collects the most "treasures." Toss a sufficient amount of "treasures" into the pool to give each player a chance to grab at least one. To make the game more complex for advanced swimmers you might toss only "sunken treasures" in the deep end and require all divers to dive in proper form.

Underwater Competitions

Underwater competitions add diversity to swimming and diving games. They can be played with at least two participants but can accommodate many more than two. Examples of underwater competitions might include seeing who can hold her breath underwater the longest, determining who can race the farthest underwater without coming up for air and using goggles to judge who performs the best underwater gymnastics routine.
