What Are the Benefits of Cranberry Juice on Gum Disease?

Gum disease is also referred to as periodontal disease. Gum disease is characterized by an infection of the bone and tissues that support the teeth, according to KidsHealth. If left untreated, this condition may lead to tooth loss. Some dentists may treat this condition by scraping your teeth or using antibiotics. More severe cases of gum disease may require surgery; however, when used as a preventative treatment, cranberries may help to reduce the amount of bacteria that adhere to your teeth and gums. Speak with your dental provider before using alternative treatments to treat gum disease.

Symptoms

Symptoms of gum disease may vary, depending on the severity of it. However, common symptoms may include loose teeth, bad breath or halitosis that will not go away, gums that frequently bleed during brushings, receding gums and gums that appear to be discolored. According to KidsHealth, healthy gums will have a pink color and will appear firm, not red or swollen.

Cranberries

Cranberries are native to North America and have been used medicinally for centuries. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, cranberries are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. The most common medicinal use of this fruit is for the prevention of urinary tract infections; however, studies suggest that properties in cranberries can help to prevent bacteria from adhering around the teeth and gums and may help to prevent cavities, according to the university. It is not recommended to use cranberry juice for oral hygiene due to the high sugar content.

Uses

Cranberry juice is generally considered safe; however, the fruit contains chemicals that may increase the risk of developing kidney stones. The suggested amount for adults is 3 or more ounces of pure cranberry juice per day. Cranberry juice cocktail may be drunk at about 10 ounces per day. If you choose to eat fresh cranberries, the University of Maryland Medical Center suggest eating 1.5 ounces.

Prevention

Certain steps can be taken to prevent gum disease. For example, brushing your teeth at least twice per day and flossing regularly can help prevent bacteria from festering on your gums and teeth. Eliminating sugary foods such as candy and other plaque causing bacteria will reduce the risk of this condition developing. In addition, regular dental visits and cleanings will help to keep your mouth healthy.
