The Ultimate Fighting Championship, or UFC, is an organization based in the United States and promotes mixed martial arts cage fighting. Various techniques or fighting styles are used, such as karate, wrestling, kickboxing and jiu-jitsu. The members of the UFC are extremely skilled, talented fighters with extensive training who are hand selected by UFC president Dana White.
Kickboxing
Some UFC fighters, such as Mirko Cro Cop, have adopted kickboxing as part of their fighting style. Kickboxing involves the elements of boxing and martial arts and consists of punches, kicks and conditioning. Various martial art kicks are used, such as roundhouse or straight leg. Jabs, hooks, uppercuts and straight punches are all commonly used in as part of kickboxing. Conditioning training helps you deliver stronger, more powerful blows to your opponent.
Karate
Various karate styles are used within the UFC, depending upon the fighter's preference and fighting techniques. Lyoto Machida uses karate-style fighting during his cage matches, but this will vary from one fighter to the next. In general, karate helps you learn attack and block moves to take an opponent down while protecting yourself. Leg sweeps are often performed during UFC matches to take an opponent down at a safe distance from the fighter.
Jiu-Jitsu
Jiu-jitsu-style fighting was brought to the United States from Brazil by the Gracie family. Some UFC fighters such as Frank Mir and Anderson Silva have adopted this submissive style. Brazilian jiu-jitsu involves kicks and punches to close distance and take the opponent down. Once the opponent is down, the fighter will be able to pull off a submissive hold from the top or bottom of his opponent. Commonly used submissive holds in the UFC involve triangle and rear naked chokes.
Wrestling
Wrestling is another style adopted by some UFC fighters such as Brock Lesnar and Randy Couture. UFC wrestling is very different from the sports entertainment that you might see on Vince McMahon's World Wrestling Entertainment. In the UFC, you won't see fighters running the ropes or using props such as tables, chairs and ladders. UFC fighters use wrestling moves such as single- and double-leg takedowns to take down their opponent and gain a dominant position.
