Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that helps protect your cells, tissues and organs from free radical damage and aids in red blood cell formation. Despite these benefits, adults who take more than 1,000 mg of vitamin E may be at risk of developing vitamin E toxicity. Seek emergency medical care if you develop vitamin E overdose symptoms to ensure you receive prompt and appropriate care.
Stomach Upset
Consuming too much vitamin E may irritate your digestive tract, leading to symptoms of nausea or vomiting. You may also experience frequent bowel movement urges accompanied by abdominal pain, bloating or flatulence. If you develop persistent stomach discomfort, vomiting or diarrhea, or sudden or severe abdominal pain, contact your physician as soon as possible as these severe stomach symptoms are also associated with appendicitis or dehydration.
Fatigue or Weakness
Prolonged or excessive treatment with vitamin E supplements may result in symptoms of fatigue or weakness. Excessive fatigue may make it difficult for you to remain active, alert or focused during normal daily responsibilities. Sensations of weakness may also limit your ability to participate in your usual physical activities such as walking up a flight of stairs or going for a run.
Blurred Vision
Though blurred vision is a vitamin E overdose symptom, you may also experience vision issues after taking just 200 mg of this supplement, the American Pregnancy Association reports. You may be unable to drive or move about normally without assistance due to blurred vision. Vision problems are also associated with headache pain or dizziness. If blurred vision persists or is accompanied by vision loss, consult your physician immediately.
Unusual Bleeding or Bruising
High levels of vitamin E in your body may interfere with how your blood clots following injury. Improper clotting may result in excessive bleeding or unusual bruising after you sustain only minor injuries. Talk with your doctor as soon as possible if you experience any abnormal bleeding complications while taking vitamin E supplements.
