Head lice can be itchy, embarrassing and irritating and can affect anyone at any age. They are one of the most common communicable diseases among school children next to the common cold. Prescription and over-the-counter medications are available for ridding the head of these wingless insects. When used as an alternative treatment, herbs such as tea tree oil may help control lice infestations.
Symptoms
Some common symptoms of head lice can include intense to severe itching, which may result in tiny red bumps on your scalp, the appearance of small white nits on the shaft of the hair near your scalp and the appearance of adult lice near the nape of your neck or in the hair behind your ears. Adult lice are approximately the size of a strawberry seed but can get to be as large as 3 mm in size.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil contains antiseptic properties and has been used for many years to treat infections. In addition, the disinfectant properties of the herbal oil can help get rid of head lice. According to MayoClinic.com, some studies have found that tea tree oil in combination with other agents or used alone may be effective against head lice; however, larger and more detailed studies are necessary to make any recommendations.
Uses
To use tea tree oil as an alternative prevention and treatment for head lice, add 25 drops of tea tree oil to 1 pint of distilled water and rub it into your hair and on your scalp three times a day. Once the mixture has been applied to your hair and scalp, comb your hair starting at the scalp and going down the shaft using a fine-toothed comb to remove eggs and lice.
Possible Side Effects
If you are prone to sensitive skin, you may experience an allergic reaction that may cause itching, burning and blistering of the skin. This reaction can be severe if you have a pre-existing condition such as eczema. When using tea tree oil for head lice, use caution and make sure to avoid contact with your eyes, as it can cause irritation.
