Skin is the body's largest organ. It creates a barrier that protects the body's internal organs from microorganisms and toxins. Hair grows on almost every surface of the body and its role is to provide warmth. Both of these components of the body -- hair and skin -- are made of the same substance, keratin protein. As a result, they need the same nutrients to function well. To improve the health of hair and skin, consider taking herbal supplements that provide beneficial effects.

Ginkgo Biloba

Hair disorders, such as hair loss and dandruff, may benefit from the active compounds in ginkgo biloba. The herb inhibits blood platelet aggregation that increases blood flow to the scalp, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. It also contains high levels of antioxidants that neutralize free radicals and mitigate the effects of aging. The recommended dose of ginkgo biloba for hair health is 40mg to 80mg of the standardized extract, three times per day. Discuss the use of ginkgo biloba with a qualified health care provider.

Rosemary, Peppermint and Sage

Dandruff, hair loss caused by clogged sebaceous glands and infections of the skin may be treated with a topical herbal application in order to remove dead skin cells and promote hair growth. "Natural Health" magazine recommends preparing a topical treatment with three to four drops of rosemary, peppermint and sage oils mixed with 1 tbsp. of olive or almond oil. Massage onto the scalp or affected skin up to two times per day. Consult your health care provider regarding the use of rosemary, peppermint and sage for medicinal purposes.

Horsetail

Horsetail is an herb that contains silica, a mineral found in high concentrations in skin cells. Silica helps create collagen, an important component of skin. "Natural Health" magazine recommends preparing a bath with horsetail and other beneficial ingredients to support the health of your skin. Prepare a horsetail goat milk bath treatment by steeping 1 cup of horsetail herb in 2 cups of hot water for 20 minutes. Add 1 oz. of goat's milk until blended. Pour the mixture into a warm bath and soak. Get your doctor's OK before using horsetail for your skin.

Kelp

Kelp is an effective supplement for detoxifying, remineralizing and conditioning the skin, according to "Yoga Journal." Consider taking a kelp supplement to benefit from its ingredients and effects: Essential fatty acids increase skin elasticity; chlorophyll detoxifies impurities; vitamin A is an antioxidant that supports the normal function of your skin cells; and amino acids condition the skin. Types of kelp supplements include bladderwrack, kelp, Irish moss and algae extract.
