The PowerBlock and Bowflex are two types of exercise equipment that may help you build muscle or lose weight, depending on your training style and diet. The PowerBlock and Bowflex are both made for home use and may be beneficial if you wish to set up an exercise program without a gym membership.

Equipment Type

The PowerBlock is a dumbbell set that allows you to adjust the resistance without requiring additional equipment. Bowflex home gyms are full gym systems, rather than just dumbbells alone, that offer the ability to perform a variety of resistance exercises with adjustable resistance.

Number of Models

The PowerBlock is available in three models with slightly different features. The Urethane series features padded wrist supports. The Sports series has a wider grip opening. The Classic series is the company's original model. Bowflex home gyms are differentiated by the amount of exercises you can perform on each model. There are five Bowflex home gyms -- the Classic, Xtreme SE, Xtreme 2 SE, Ultimate 2 and Revolution.

Portability

Although PowerBlocks are heavy, they can be transported for use on trips. Bowflex gyms require assembly and would have to be disassembled for travel.

Amount of Resistance

PowerBlocks are available in three different resistance sets. Sets of 50 lbs., 90 lbs. and 130 lbs. are available. The Bowflex Classic provides up to 210 lbs., while the Ultimate 2, Xtreme SE and Xtreme 2 SE provide up to 410 lbs. of resistance. The Revolution provides up to 300 lbs. of resistance.
