An exercise ball is a large, inflatable vinyl ball used to perform exercises. Originally, exercise balls were used mainly for abdominal and lower back exercises. Now their use has expanded to Pilates and yoga. They are a popular piece of home fitness equipment because they are easy to use and store. You must be careful to choose a properly sized exercise ball or you may not be able to use it.
Step 1
Go to a store that specializes in fitness equipment. Specialized stores will have a larger selection of exercise balls from which to chose than most big-box retailers. This will help you choose the exercise ball that is right for you.
Step 2
Find an exercise ball that is the proper size for your height. If you are between 5-foot-1 and 5-foot-7, the Mayo Clinic says you should choose a 55 centimeter exercise ball. If you are between 5-foot-8 and 6-foot-1, a 65 centimeter ball is appropriate. Anyone 6-foot-2 and over should choose a 75 centimeter ball.
Step 3
Ask a sales person to inflate the exercise ball for you so you can try it out. Most fitness equipment stores can inflate an exercise ball right on the premises.
Step 4
Sit on the exercise ball to confirm that it's the right size for you. The Mayo Clinic says your knees should be at a right angle as you sit on the exercise ball with your feet on the floor. If the ball is uncomfortable, try another size.
Tips and Warnings
- Exercises will be more difficult when your exercise ball is more firmly inflated. If you are just starting out, the Mayo Clinic recommends letting out some of the air so your exercise ball is slightly deflated. This will make it easier to do your exercise routine until you build up your strength and gain some experience with exercise ball workouts.
- Although you can usually choose the right exercise ball based on your height, Simple Fitness Solutions says that certain factors will affect the size you need. You may need a larger ball if you have back problems or very long legs.
